Before they are hanged
Author: Joe Abercrombie
Series: The First Law Trilogy #2
Genre: Fantasy
Original publication date: March 2017
Book description: Superior Glokta has a problem. How do you defend a city surrounded by enemies and riddled with traitors, when your allies can by no means be trusted, and your predecessor vanished without a trace? It’s enough to make a torturer want to run – if he could even walk without a stick.
Northmen have spilled over the border of Angland and are spreading fire and death across the frozen country. Crown Prince Ladisla is poised to drive them back and win undying glory. There is only one problem – he commands the worst-armed, worst-trained, worst-led army in the world.
And Bayaz, the First of the Magi, is leading a party of bold adventurers on a perilous mission through the ruins of the past. The most hated woman in the South, the most feared man in the North, and the most selfish boy in the Union make a strange alliance, but a deadly one. They might even stand a chance of saving mankind from the Eaters. If they didn’t hate each other quite so much.
Thoughts:
The story is again slow-moving and yet a lot of things happen.
I took my time reading this book, Why? I am not sure.
I read maybe 100 pages per day so it did take me over a week to finish it!
You care a lot more for the characters, Glotka but not only him you spend more time with the Named men who went to help the Union, with Jezal, the Bloody Nine and the others who have joined Bazal the first of the Magi.
We see them struggle in their own way the travel of the first Magi to the end of the world, the group does not know where they are going and just know that is important to end the fight going on in the other side of the country. As they go along the First Magi tells them the story of the places they go by ad the story of the old-time, the wars between the Magi and how the wars came to be and destroy the grandeur they pass through. It is very interesting as well.
On the other side, Glotka is also facing his own fights, he is sent to investigate a territory of the Union where there was an assassination of the man in charge. He replaces him and starts to investigate his disappearance (assassination).
Again the main interest is the characters, we have a few romantic semblances but very very little. We have friendships and bonds forged in their hardships.
The complaint, the war is not doing so well, the enemy seems unbeatable!
I finally read this, I had intended to read this since the beginning of the year XD
I a getting closer to the end of a series, I hope to get to the third one maybe next month! Let's see how long it takes me to actually pick it up.
