This is how you lose the time war
Author: Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Genre: Sci-fi
Original publication date: July 2019
Book description: Two time-traveling agents from warring futures, working their way through the past, begin to exchange letters—and fall in love in this thrilling and romantic book from award-winning authors Amal-El Mohtar and Max Gladstone.
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandant finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading.
Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, grows into something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future.
Except the discovery of their bond would mean death for each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win that war. That’s how war works. Right?
Thoughts:
This was a ride for real.
The writing is very flowery and heavily focused on romance. The two women love each other for no real reason. You do not see much of it. They are people from enemy lines who start to exchange letters and initially are taunting each other but very quickly switch to caring for the other.
It was super interesting as it was read and so fake. They care for one another I feel like simply because the other represents something they could never have but with the letters, they shared it does not explain the deep feeling they have for one another.
Yet as I was reading I was totally trapped. I enjoyed my time but I was left very confused at the end.
This is the type of book that I heard as audio but now I want to reread in physical format! This is the type of story that require a reread and catch the little details.
The ending! Argh the fact that they are in a position to time travel and yet the ending was like ooooh!
If you like a plot-driven story, do NOT read. Also, there is an open ending, the time travel thing was used very confusing. And the world they both come from which sounds very interesting, is not explored at all, I mean the story is told in letters to each other. There is no reason to explain the world, they live in it, no need to be explained XD
It makes sense with the writing style the story uses, still, the world was just as unknown at the end of the story as at the beginning, that was a bit annoying and yet I loved it!
Initially, I had given this 4.5 but as time went on, I realize there were different little details that felt as shortcomings as you can see. But in enjoyment, it definitely was top rating.
This book was part of the Good Reads Choice Awards 2019. It ended up be it the #4 I understand why it was among the top choices. This only makes me more excited to read the other choices that ended up higher up.
