The shining
Author: Stephen King
Genre: Horror
Original publication date: January 1977
Book description: Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.
Thoughts:
This is the second time I read this book. Again it took me a few days to get through But this second time reading it, it was more enjoyable. The first time I was greatly annoyed by Jack, his behavior, his way of looking at life was aggravating.
This time I was able to be immersed a bit more and see this more like Danny than from the outside.
Jack is a man who is used to having bad luck, and by bad luck, I mean aking bad decisions and complaining about the unfairness of life when things turn out bad for him. He sees everything like is happening to him but does not take responsibility when the consequences of his actions or lack of them catch up to him.
Danny is a great kid, he too mature for is age but it comes in stages as he faces hardships that make it realistic.
The marriage described here, well not the best role model ever. The idea might be dated or just used to describe several facets of a person, just because someone is not a monster all the time or a good father doe snot make them a good husband.
The story of the Hotel, well that was masterfully crafted. Part of the ending I wanted to be a bit more informed about, but it makes sense. After the whole thing went down, we stopped paying attention to all the little details and just glossed over the consequences.
There are very little characters and yet the history of the hotel, the things trapped there, it was a very well done story.
The first time I read this I gave this 3 stars now I cannot remember why, maybe because it felt like I hated Jack and that made my enjoyment go down, but this time I really enjoyed my time reading it, I still dislike Jack, got annoyed with him ad his wife but that's exactly the point! Can't say is a bad thing, you are supposed to see the flaws in them even as you appreciate how the care for one another.
I just finished the story and this time I am kind of stuck I guess I'll give it
This is the 3rd book published by Stephen King following publication order as far as I could tell. I see why he quickly gained the fame of making amazing, thrilling stories.
