Los de Abajo

Author: Mariano Azuela

Genre: Historical Fiction
Original publication date: 1916
Book description: It tells the story of how people who were caught up in the struggle be it thrown into joining due to a previous issue with the law or showing those who joined due to true belief on the cause.

Thoughts:
The idea is interesting. We see how people were so very unfortunate living in scraps, among poor excuses for housing and work. Overworked and underpaid, treated badly, insulted and deprived of the opportunity we see as basic such as education where most people were treated awfully for being ignorant and dirty.
Demetrio is a man who has courage and drive for fighting but he is definitely not a man I personally would say is a hero or a good person. He fits among his compatriots of the time. He was a man who thought nothing mattered more than honor, fighting, drinking and who saw women as nothing but a means of release and who went around using as he saw fit for his enjoyment at the time he saw one. He has his wife and child he cared about obviously but that meant nothing other than something to say he cared about, he still preferred to be away fighting and enjoying life when possible.
The men who followed him were initially well treated as the poor of the country were thirsty for justice and wanted the fight to be on their favor but soon the poor started to see the revolutionaries as a problem just like the soldiers.
It is like many older works, hard to get through even if the idea sounds interesting, the behavior is something I struggle with and the writing style is a bit dry.
We will continue to try to get used to the style, with time I will find something that I enjoy more than this.

This book was part of the Draw TBR Game it as used for the propmt to read a book by a Mexican author.
