Book description from Good Reads: A mysterious woman, a legendary cursed jewel, and a night train to the French riviera -- ingredients for the perfect romance or the perfect crime? When the train stops, the jewel is missing, and the woman is found dead in her compartment. It's the perfect mystery, filled with passion, greed, deceit. And Hercule Poirot is the perfect detective to solve it
Thoughts:
We see once more Hercule Poirot get dragged into a mystery that seems very straight forward and yet it raises a few questions.
A very rich woman who is in the verge of divorcing her husband is found killed in a train trip she took in order to see her lover.
The husband is completely ignorant of the trip his soon to be ex-wife was taking and as the divorce had not taken place as of yet he is the sole heir of the woman's fortune.
The police are at first lost on what to do, the crime is very straight forward a robbery gone wrong as she had a very expensive piece of jewelry. But it took place on a train and simply anyone could have done it so they expect the investigation to go nowhere.
the father of the victim decides to bring in a very prominent detective, Poirot of course.
In the investigation, a new layer is uncovered. The woman was supposed to be going to a specific place and yet the train was on the way to somewhere else, and BAM the woman had a secret lover. The police conclude upon that discovery that the woman was killed by the lover who was a known player, he is known to target a very rich woman, and it's suspected he had never any money of his own and simply lives off taking the money from the women he is able to trick.
Again no real proof, the police is going from a very certain theory to another and Poirot simply pulls the strings and he knows exactly what happens but will not say anything until he can prove each little theory and clue he finds.
The father of the victim simply wants to know what happened, who the killer is, the why, and have ht police arrest the guilty party so they can pay for taking the life of his daughter.
It is a very interesting story and again we see Poirot uncover the events that took place a piece at a time.
I am currently working on my way through Agatha Christie works but they are a lot of them I am definitely going to take a while to get through them. I am in the first decade of her professional life as writer, and wow she produced a book a year for about 55 years. That is an amazing career.
I understand why she is an icon in crime mystery stories.
