The lost world
Author: Michael Crichton
Series: Jurassic Park #2
Translator: Carlos Milla Soler
Original publication date: September 1995
Book description: It is now six years since the secret disaster at Jurassic Park, six years since that extraordinary dream of science and imagination came to a crashing end--the dinosaurs destroyed, the park dismantled, the island indefinitely closed to the public.
There are rumors that something has survived.
Thoughts:
So the second book I bought in Spanish by mistake. The change in this one was not jarring as the names and everything is easy to move from English, so I had no problem adapting. I just really need to stop jumping between languages in the same series.
But I finally will read the story, as I mentioned before this is the first time I read it, even if I have seen the movies plenty of times.
We follow an eccentric rich young researcher, he believes the extension idea is wrong. He wants to prove his theory. The theory he has is that in a corner of the world animals believed to be extinct still live. He is certain that it's impossible to have the extinction of several species at the relatively same time.
There are people who are looking into the dropped project Hammon had half a decade ago, and the survivors are busy trying to ignore and deny any discussion of dinosaurs and genetic work on extinct species. Yet they can't seem to run far away enough as there are rumors surfacing about reptiles, attacks of unidentified animals, things are refusing to be covered up.
There are several different people looking for the dinosaurs, some who are willing to go through every loophole and make rash decisions to get it.
We get a few new characters, scientists, a few unsuspecting students who get caught up while they try to assist one of their teachers.
So it very different from the movie. A few of the original people have to go to the Island, they discover a few buried secrets the Hammond organization had kept even all those years. It has adventure and gruesome deaths at the hand of humans and animals (dinosaurs).
It is a very fast read, its interesting and entertaining but it was not what I was expecting. It has less action than what I wanted, the animals are not crazy and out to kill them simply because like it seemed in the movies. It makes sense, most dinosaurs would no recognize humans so they had no interest on hunting them.
I recommend it, its a very interesting take, we have a few discussions on the behavior of the dinosaurs, we have teamwork, we do see a very self-centered man who is forced to grow up, see his mistakes and become a better person during this journey, we have the antagonists in a way but no real big bad guy to defeat and the quest that seems impossible to reach, find dinosaurs and leave the island alive. It is hard to describe but I really enjoyed my time reading it!
